Professional Development Day
So Arlene proposed a great idea to do poetry night at Bestseller. Unfortunately, it didn't go through and we were stuck today wondering how the heck we were going to get our project done on such short notice, since the activity is due tomorrow...YIKES! We therefore started calling a bunch of places to see if we could do poetry night with them. We contacted Infusion, Port of Mocha, and then finally The Tree. The Tree allowed us to do it in there little cafe and we were so happy. We rounded up a bunch of people: friend, co-workers, former students, family members and headed over to The Tree. Before Arlene and I got there, we went to Bestseller to find a good poetry book. There was a very minimal selection and we sat there wondering if they were going to have what we wanted. The whole idea of this professional development night was to get the crowd involved with Poem for 2 voices. Actually, the few poem books that they had were really awesome that now both Arlene and I are really interested in. I bought one named Crank (which I let my cousin-in-law borrow and I therefore don't remember the name of the author) and Arlene bought one named Identical. The authors first name is Ellen, but I am unfamiliar with her last name. These books are filled with different poems that can be read by 1-5 people. Therefore, we had a lot of fun with it. I was surprised that everyone wanted to join in and be a part of the poetry night. No one really came to stay while we were there (from 7-9 p.m.) and we took up at least half of the cafe so I was a little disappointed that no one else came to join us. But it was a really great experience.

Wow! That's really brave of you and Arlene. How did you organize which parts the audience would say?
ReplyDeleteWe just asked them if they wanted to read an excerpt from the book. Since we had two books, while one group was reading, another group was looking through the other book picking out what they wanted to read. It was really nice.
ReplyDeleteThat was cool, wish I could have been a part of that being a poet myself.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Kim and Arlene, for putting together a memorable poetry event in a short amount of time! As a poet myself, I can relate to the importance of sharing poetry with others. Kudos to both of you!
ReplyDeleteBest regards,
