I still have much to do, but I am getting there. I got to be one of the youngins last night and set out to study at Outrigger. My sister, 11 years younger than me, had told me many of her undergrad friends study there. Of course I had to get the A-ok from my husband and I still felt a tinge of guilt leaving my two little ones behind, but I headed on out. Thought I would give it a shot and see if it worked any miracles on completing assignments.
As far as the transactional theory goes, I did not realize such in-depth theories existed about the simple act of reading. I have always believed there was never a fixed meaning to a piece of literature. I found it difficult in high school when the teacher would tell us what a reading really meant. It was nice to discover there was a name for something I held true. The term really does it no justice. I believe if teachers approach literature in this way children will enjoy it more. The idea that no boundaries exist allows them to wander further into the world of literature
By the way, Romel and Nerissa study at the Sheraton. Studying is so high-class nowadays. The barista at Jungle Java Outrigger told me my Mocha had a double shot, just what I needed.
In this course, educators will learn how to support the needs of adolescent and young adults, helping them develop into confident, and independent readers and writers. Focus will be on the improvement of literacy skills through meaningful, constructive engagements in reading and writing.
I, too, learned a lot from reading research done on Rosenblatt's transactional theory as well as other reader response theories - all that to help an individual really understand what he/she is reading. I've heard before that reading is just like any art, but I'm glad to know that this is an art that can be done with any content throughout the curriculum!
ReplyDeleteIt interesting to learn that she was not truly recognized for this major contribution to the world of education until almost fifty years later. It's nice to know that she is being honored these days for her efforts.
ReplyDeleteAnd it is fortunate she was recognized in her lifetime! She lived to be 100...probably because she was open to differences!
ReplyDeleteHyatt has wireless internet so during breaks from the conference we were able to do more research. You would think a library would be the place to do this but with technology research can happen in the car if we needed it.
ReplyDeleteI used to go to Outrigger, too, but then I was told that I had to order, so I ordered the prime rib sandwhich....mmm....ALICIA...I'm done with all the assignments....LOL...OVERACHIEVER...LOL
