...No wonder why I'm feeling the stress of it all!
The past few days have been very overwhelming. I know, though, through persistence and a lot of discipline, we can all express that big sigh of relief a few short weeks from now....and then the school year starts! Aye!!!
At any rate, like many of us in this course, I enjoyed going down memory lane when writing about my early years of reading and writing. Just last week I re-purchased my yearbook (I guess someone found extra stored somewhere in JFK; proceeds go to the ribbon cutting ceremony) and looking through old high school memories fit well with this assignment. But the assignment also reminded me how fortunate I am and how important it is to have learned to read and write and to be where I'm at today. I am reminded of my grandfather and how he is not able to to either, but he expresses that he wished he were able to.
Then there's Under the Blood Red Sun - even though I'm not finished with the book yet, there's always a part I run into in each chapter that I can relate to or imagine clearly because of the fact that Tomi values the importance of both nationalities as part of his identity. I've even recommended reading the book to my 13 year old niece who is visiting from Seattle, hoping she, too, can relate to Tomi.
In this course, educators will learn how to support the needs of adolescent and young adults, helping them develop into confident, and independent readers and writers. Focus will be on the improvement of literacy skills through meaningful, constructive engagements in reading and writing.
Renee,
ReplyDeleteThere's no doubt that all your hard work will pay off in the end. Not only will you gain a wealth of knowledge regarding various literacy strategies, but you will also be another step closer to obtaining your MAT Degree! Visualize that day often, and it will continue to motivate you to get things done!
Best regards,
Dr. Rivera
P.S. I'm sure your niece will have much to say after reading, "Under the Blood Red Sun." Be prepared for the dialogue!
I too looked at one assignment and thought, 'oh, that's not due till Aug', then I looked at the calendar, and realized it it barely 2 wks away!! YIKES!! Am trying to keep up or ahead, and so far I'm hanging in there. Sadly, I have neglected a couple of other classes though. Ok, back to work.
ReplyDeleteWe are very fortunate for the educational opportunities we have in front of us. I'm with you on that, Renee. My grandmother was the same - she only reached the 2nd grade in the Philippines, then had to stop because of poverty and having to give up going to school in order to work, even at such a young age. If she were still alive today, I would definitely teach her English and help her improve her literacy, because it's never too late to learn.
ReplyDeleteEven with all the anxiety these courses are giving us, we shouldn't take it for granted. To reiterate Dr. Rivera, it'll pay off in the end.
