All of you that are interested in Motheread

I have some good news and some bad news. The good news first, just because I'm that kind of person that needs good news first...If anyone is interested, there is a new program called Picturing America Picturing Guam and it is open to volunteers. After speaking with Ms Cathy Flores at the Guam Council of Humanties, she said that this program would require a workshop attendance and then you would be able to earn some professional development credit for doing it.

Now the bad news, Motheread is a closed program. Meaning, they had trained a team of people to go out and help families and adults read. The last of its sessions are being held at Iron Wood on Mondays and Wednesdays 6pm-9pm. They don't have people just volunteering, they do encourage us to go participate, but we would not be there to help. If Dr Rivera is okay with us going and participating then you are welcome to just drop in.

Anyone interested in the Picturing American Picturing Guam, let me know and I will forward the contact information of the program coordinators.

  1. Jess,

Thanks for the update! I approve each of the events to meet the professional development activity requirement. Ensure that you prepare a reflection for the event that you participate in. It would be a good idea to also take photos to post on our blog, so that we can get a picture of your experience. Of course, you'll have to provide a caption for the pictures.

Arlene also mentioned a poetry reading event. If you wish to create your own poetry activity/poetry slam, then that's another option. If you engage in this, then you'll also have to provide a reflection on the logistics and how this event strengthens your professional development. There's no doubt that this will improve literacy and creativity on island!

Good luck as you explore the different professional development literacy opportunities! Keep me posted.

    Best regards,
    Dr. Rivera
