Reading and Writing Influences
My mother was a huge influence in my education since I was a child. And this was primarily because she was a Kindergarten teacher and knew from experience how important reading and writing was. One of her strategies was nightly bedtime stories and afternoon naps. Of course, this led to my natural love of reading. And so here I am taking this course to learn new and improved strategies to encourage my future students to embrace reading and writing.

I'm seeing a common trend in individuals that have educators in the family. Myself and some of my cohort members did not choose education as a career path but for some reason, possibly the close relation to the field, has lead us to this path. I recall my mom raising me in the same manner, but for some reason I never really took a liking to reading.
ReplyDeleteI can see the similarities in your experience and in my niece who has a mom (my sister) for an elementary teacher and my niece's love for reading. At the age of 10, in this day in age where everyone is on their iPhone, iPad, i-technology-something, it's great to see a little girl spending her summer enjoying the finer, more simpler things in life!
ReplyDeleteMy mom's primary language is Thai so she didn't give us any bedtime stories. She is a great storyteller though and is so animated when she's telling us a story about her life in Thailand or her day at work. My siblings and I all had an early appreciation for reading. I mostly enjoy sinking into a good book and being able to use my imagination. I really hate it when Hollywood gets the casting wrong in movies based on books! haha I always think the characters I pick in my mind work best. I won't even get started on the Twilight movies.
ReplyDeleteShirleen,
ReplyDeleteYou had a wonderful literacy foundation! Kudos to your Mom for empowering you to gain the disposition for the love of reading! I wish you the best as you engage your students in literacy strategies that will make a difference!
Best regards,
Dr. Rivera
PJ - you'll LOVE my comment in Moodle regarding Twilight :) But I must say, my imagination is way better than what they came up with on the past films!
ReplyDeleteMy mom, too, would be animated in telling her stories. I think it's because English isn't her first language, so I see the effort she puts in and the passion coming out when she engages in storytelling. That's one good aspect we can take from our mothers because as a storyteller, your audience is captured more so with the passion and energy you put when telling a story!
You are sooo blessed. I didn't realize the love that my mother put into trying to make me love reading. I fought her tooth and nail. She too was an educator, but my enjoyment of reading did not happen until much later in life. In retrospect, I truly appreciate what she wanted to do, but back then, I just cried.
