Hi All, as you may have read in my previous posts Reading has not been a real hot topic of mine. I always dreaded assignments where I had to do intense research or read a book. With the support of my fellow cohort members and technology, I'm actually reading all the time now. It all started when we learned that the bookstore was out of stock or did not carry the required text for our classes. It then became a "mission" to find these books so we could complete our assignments. I spent a lot of time online reading thru sites and epinion-type sites to track down the books. It became "fun" because it was like a challenge to see who could find the books at the best prices. Long story short, ebooks popped up ad it was great because we had access to the book at anytime, anywhere. In addition to our constant communication thru Facebook and email, we all researched online and referred sources to each other to assist in completing assignments for a class which had no book (realistically) available. Here's what topped the cake! My father-in-law got a Kindle for his birthday in June and at first I wasn't too interested but I considered getting one specifically for this courses. Lo and behold, the book for this class was available in Kindle ebook. As I was pricing the Kindle online (considering getting on for myself) I was amazed to find that my phone had an application that could download ebooks like a Kindle. SUPER! One- I did not have to pay $8 a the bookstore to get the book for this class (it was like $5), two- I did not have to spend on another device, and three- it downloaded instantly. Now I'm reading anytime I'm sitting (or standing) idle. AMAZING!
The moral of my story is, there are ways to get someone to do things they don't necessarily like by manipulating the delivery. I will personally use this technique in my class.
In this course, educators will learn how to support the needs of adolescent and young adults, helping them develop into confident, and independent readers and writers. Focus will be on the improvement of literacy skills through meaningful, constructive engagements in reading and writing.

Yes, technology has definitely helped me overcome many obstacles. I'm so excited for the school year to start so I can share these new findings with my students. Wait a minute, they probably already know about all of this and they'll be teaching me newer things...oh well go with the flow!
